Cloisonne is an ancient metalworking technique that creates very fine, detailed pattern of metal cells and metal inlay. In creating cloisonne, first the artist shapes the metal into a wire pattern. From there, glass crushed into powder is painted into the wire cells in a water-based paste. Firing ovens fuse together the separate parts of the art object.
