About this Map

Medieval events are often difficult to date and place. Birth dates and places are often completely unknown. Sometimes we can infer them from other, more well-documented events in a medieval person's life, or from their names (ie, William of Ockham is almost certainly from Ockham, England). But many times all we can do is make a "best guess."

All events shown on this map are placed in their approximate location -- so if an event happened in Naples, it will be located in the city, but not necessarily in its exact location in the city. Some events are so uncertain, we aren't even sure which country they should be located in!

Many places have more than one event associated with them. You may need to zoom in very far to see all of the different events that occurred in one place, especially in Paris.
