- TSA Film Screening Series Winter ‘12: The Social and Cultural Challenges in Contemporary Turkey
Turkish society has observed the rise of two social and cultural challenges to the secularist and nationalist Turkish state tradition in the last two decades. While religious and conservative circles have demanded and endorsed an Islamic lifestyle in private as well as public spheres, pro-Kurdish activists have claimed political and cultural rights for Kurdish people and other ethnic groups in the country. These two social and cultural challenges (an Islamic lifestyle demand and Kurdish rights demands) have significantly conditioned the political, social and cultural context of Turkey for two decades. TSA’s Winter ’12 Film series presents three films that capture different aspects and receptions of these challenges.
->Takva (Takva: A Man’s Fear of God) (Dir. Özer Kızıltan, 2006, 96 min.), February 10, 2012 Takva tells the story of a pious man, Muharrem, living in a solitary and meager existence of a prayer and attending weekly praying of a religious cult. The leader of the cult notices Muharrem’s religiosity and honesty. The leader offers him a post as a rent collector for various properties of the cult in Istanbul. After being equipped with a car, driver, computer and expensive suits, Muharrem faces the challenge of fulfilling requirements of the business world and upholding his religiosity at the same time. As a Turkish “new cinema” film with the aim of “Seing everything about Turkey”, Takva received mixed and conflicting responses from different circles in Turkey. Takva has received awards in Berlin, Toronto and Sarajevo International Films festivals.
->Nefes: Vatan Sağolsun (Breath: Long Live the Homeland) (Dir. Levent Semerci, 2009, 128 min.), February 28, 2012 Nefes tells the story of 40 soldiers –mostly conscripts- who were assigned to defend a relay station in the Iraqi –Turkish border. 40 young men of different backgrounds personally experience the armed conflict between the Turkish army and Kurdish rebels during the 1990s. The film successfully depicts the astonishment, helplessness, yet courage of young men who were sent to a strange part of the country due to compulsory military service. Although Nefes was primarily endorsed by nationalist circles in Turkey, it is open to different and conflicting readings.
->Fırtına / Bahoz (The Storm) (Dir. Kazım Öz, 155 min.), March 13, 2012 Bahoz tells the story of a Kurdish student, Cemal who arrives in Istanbul for his college education. Through the personal story of Cemal, it depicts the pro-Kurdish student movement in Istanbul during the 1990s. With the rise of civil war conditions in the Kurdish region of Turkey in the 1990s, a pro-Kurdish leftist student movement emerges in the colleges of big cities. Depicted as its director as a “witness of the pro-Kurdish student movement in the 1990s,” Bahoz adopts a critical stance towards both sides of the conflict, presents us courage, sincerity, yet isolation and despair of young pro-Kurdish activists in Istanbul during the 1990s.
TSA film series are free and open to public (all films are in Turkish with English subtitles). Dinner will be served at 6:00 pm before the screening. All films start at 6:30 pm at Bechtel International Center Assembly Room. A discussion will follow each screening. It is sponsored by the Stanford Graduate Student Council.
