About The Gazebo

Chronology

The Synergy Garden Gazebo was built in '02-'03 by Wes Hermann, Sam Bremmer, and Vince Dorie with the help of resident temp laborers. Laura Ward (RA) later added the tile mosaic.

Construction and Constitution

The construction took a few weeks. Six three foot deep holes were pick-axed into the rocky synergy soil. 100 lbs of concrete were poured into each hole to hold up the six steel uprights. The curved top of the gazebo is constructed of bent PVC pipe. The paint is Rustoleum Hunter Green. The bench is made of stained pine 2x4s with a coating of marine grade epoxy. The bench was fully assembled outside the finished Gazebo and moved into place by residents bending the steel uprights with their minds (but really, can you guess how it was done? It was hard).

Official Status

No official approval for the Gazebo was ever obtained before or after construction. However, the Stanford official in charge of campus historical preservation who almost single handedly saved the Cooksey House (Synergy) from being torn down after the '89 quake remarked "Oh! How nice! You've built a Gazebo!"
