Woodworking Shop Aka Tool Shed

Synergy's "toolshed" matured into a full fledged woodworking shop through the efforts of Summer (House Manager 05-06)and Amit Ganguli (resident and long term guest 04-06).

It all began when Summer placed an ad in Craigslist asking for donations of tools and supplies to a student co-op at Stanford.

A kind and generous gentleman donated a power Radial Arm Saw. Amit then upgraded the saw with a new safety device (available for free!) and a new work surface.

Summer, Amit and other residents then scoured both craigslist and local construction sites for free lumber. VAST amounts of lumber were gathered, mostly out of dumpsters headed for the landfill! We accomplished our task partly with the unknowing help of the Stanford Physics Department, whose truck we borrowed on several occasions for transporting wood.

Next came the heavy duty work bench, which Amit designed and built ENTIRELY out of this "waste" wood. The top is 2" thick "micro-lam" - it is the stuff that goes into making 20 year roofs. The legs are 3x6" construction hardwood, and the cross beams are 3x8" construction hard wood. Bottom Line? It's beefy.

Following this a spate of woodworking was carried out mostly by Amit, Summer and Jon Sanders. Together and apart they built a variety of projects including the soy milk shelf, spice rack, knife board, shop toolboard and shelves, the tea rack, the free store, the SIG Bed, wooden walkway to the Gazebo, and 5 gigantic raised garden beds.

Except for the SIG Bed, all of these projects were made almost exclusively from dumpster rescued lumber.
