Friends of forensics, November. A cool Autumnal breeze. Pumpkin Pies. Thanksgiving cooking. And the Veterans' Day Marty Cronin Invitational for Hurricane Relief. The tournament will be held on Friday, November 11th and Saturday, November 12th in beautiful Santa Clara, California. On Sunday, November 13th, we will be holding an exclusive one-day round robin for some of the very top high school parliamentary teams in the nation. (The main tournament on the 11th and 12th is entirely separate from the round robin on the 13th). Registration will be open until midnight on Wednesday, November 9th, and if you need a special extension to get your entries in, don't hesitate to ask. Last year, the Marty Cronin Invitational was the largest all-parli tournament of the Bay Area, and we are expecting to draw an even larger crowd this year. The tournament itself received overwhelmingly positive feedback from those who filled out the feedback form, with comments such as "Once again, a great parli tournament. Can you host two tournaments per year? You're the only one who runs on time!", "The tournament ran extremely efficiently and smoothly, as always.", and "These were the best parli topics all year. There were a lot of flow judges and lay judges were well-informed. I haven't heard any complaints about judging or RFDs at all, which is very rare. Great job!" And we will be making changes to make our tournament even better, including: * 7 preliminary rounds of debate (as opposed to 6 last year), * Elimination of pre-seeding to determine first-round pairings, * Proceeds go to Red Cross disaster relief efforts, and * Fairer elimination rounds so as to avoid an OPP skew, where two topics are announced and one team gets to select the topic and the other gets to select sides. Just like last year, ALL teams with a winning record will be guaranteed participation in out-rounds. Having seven rounds ensures that all teams will clearly have winning or losing records, and that nobody will end up breaking even. All rule disputes will be evaluated in accordance with the National Parliamentary Debate League Rule for Debating and Judging, articles IV and V, and section C of Article III. These rules are available at http://cgi.stanford.edu/~mvassar/npdl/YaBB.pl?action=rules For further information and the form to register, please visit: http://www.stanford.edu/~mvassar - and if you know any other schools who may be interested in the tournament, I encourage you to inform them of the link. Thanks! Matt Vassar Tournament Director
