The UC Berkeley Parliamentary Debate Team would like to invite you to the first annual Berkeley Fall Classic, to be held at UC Berkeley October 14-15, 2006. We offer Lincoln-Douglas, Policy, and Parliamentary debate, in addition to Extemporaneous Speaking, Expository Speaking, Duo Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Dramatic Interpretation, and Original Oratory. We will break to appropriate elimination rounds in all events and guarantee a quarterfinal round in all debate events, though we anticipate that the field will be large enough to offer octofinals in some debate events and semifinals in individual events. We will recognize all elimination round participants, in addition to the top 5 speakers in each division of debate. In addition, we offer cash prizes to the top 4 contestants in Lincoln-Douglas Debate. As always, we will have fantastic judging, great competition, and the chance to see Berkeley without the rain (and before Berkeley applications are due). Our schedule is reasonable enough that you will have time to explore the campus and the surrounding area in between rounds and get a bite at one of Berkeley’s fantastic restaurants. We will also be holding a Lincoln-Douglas Round Robin on Friday, October 13, and all rounds will be open to the public (if coming out on Friday the Thirteenth doesn’t scare you too much). We look forward to seeing you in Berkeley this October! Feel free to contact us if you have any questions. Thomas Brugato, Ryan Lawrence, Alex Smith Student Directors, Cal Parli Lincoln-Douglas Debate We will offer seven rounds of Lincoln-Douglas debate on the September-October NFL topic (the CHSSA fall topic). Preliminary rounds will be double-flighted and elimination rounds may be flighted depending on time and judge availability. Speech times are 6-3-7-3-4-6-3, with 4 minutes of preparation time per debater. We will allow the use of “flex-prep” so long as both debaters and the judge(s) consent. Elimination rounds will be seeded based on wins, adjusted speaker points, opponent wins, and judge variance, in that order. We will not break brackets. All elimination round participants and the top five speakers will receive awards, and the top four finishers will receive cash awards (50 dollars for each semifinalist, 100 dollars for the runner-up, and 200 dollars for the champion). Each school may enter up to six Lincoln-Douglas debaters; if we have extra room, we will take debaters from a waitlist. Policy Debate We will offer seven rounds of Policy Debate on the NFL 2006-2007 topic (public service). Each team will have two eight-minute constructives, two three-minute cross examination periods, and two five-minute rebuttals with eight minutes of preparation time per team. Elimination rounds will be seeded based on wins, adjusted speaker points, opponent wins, and judge variance, in that order. We will not break brackets. All elimination round participants and the top five speakers will receive awards. Each school may enter up to four Policy Debate teams; if we have extra room, we will take extra teams from a waitlist. Parliamentary Debate Parliamentary debate will feature NPDA times (7-8-8-8-4-5) with twenty minutes of preparation time per team. Group preparation and coaching are allowed. Elimination rounds will be seeded based on wins, adjusted speaker points, opponent wins, and judge variance, in that order. We will not break brackets. All elimination round participants and the top five speakers in each division will receive awards. There is no cap on the number of parliamentary debate teams. Individual Events We offer Extemporaneous Speaking, Original Oratory, Impromptu Speaking, Expository Speaking, Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, and Duo Interpretation. All events will follow NFL rules. Semifinal and final round participants will be selected based on total ranks, points, and total number of “1’s”, “2’s”, etc., in that order. Due to scheduling concerns double-entry between debate and speech is not allowed. There is no cap on the number of individual events entries. Judging All teams are required to provide 1 judge per 3 Lincoln-Douglas debaters or fraction thereof and 1 judge per 2 parliamentary or policy teams or fraction thereof. In addition, all teams are required to provide 1 judge per 5 individual events entries. All judges are committed one round beyond the elimination of their students. Schools whose judges miss their ballots will be fined 25 dollars per ballot missed. Teams that do not pay these fines will be blocked from registration at the California Invitational in February. Teams whose judges are chronically absent will not be allowed to break and will not receive awards. We will most likely offer a few judge strikes in LD and Policy; this decision will be made later by tournament staff after we get a sense of the tournament’s size. We will offer hired debate judges for 80 Dollars per uncovered LD entry and 150 per uncovered two-person debate entry. Independent Entries We will allow participants to enter independently so long as a parent or other legal guardian consents and agrees to indemnify the Berkeley Fall Classic, the Berkeley Parliamentary Debate Society, the Office of Student Life, the University of California, and any and all individuals in their employ of any and all liability. We expect that independent participants will observe this policy, as well as all relevant policies of their team, school, and school district, in good faith. We may, at our discretion, require additional permissions (from a debate coach or school administrator, for instance) or disallow independent entries if we suspect that any of these policies are not being observed in good faith. Debaters interested in entering independently should email us for an additional independent entry form; this form, in addition to payment in full, must be mailed to us before Friday, September 29. Sweepstakes: We will offer sweepstakes awards to the top 3 teams. Parking Permit Parking is available in the Hearst and Channing lots (named after the streets they are located on). Parking is scarce, so arrive early to take advantage of it while you can (other parking, such as the Sather Gate complex, is available, but is significantly more expensive). Registration All entries must be recieved by Friday, September 29 at the latest. However, we encourage you to get your entries in as soon as possible, since we expect the tournament to fill up well before then. All entries must be sent by email to calparli@gmail.com. All schools must be paid in full by late registration on Saturday, October 14, at the very latest. If you have not paid in full and do not register (either in person or by phone) by then, your entries will not appear on the round 1 schematic.
