Physical Distancing

Summary

Social distancing is a common practice after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Most health organizations recommend a 6ft separation between people. Physical distancing controls are relatively inexpensive or free, accessible, and have a negligible impact on the environment.

The following engineering controls can help promote social distancing in buildings.

Distancing Rings

Crafting a physical circle with a 6ft diameter is a clear way to recommend social distancing between occupants. These circles can be crafted with colored tape, stickers, carpet designs, circular rugs, spray paint, chalk and more.

Walking Arrows

One-way aisles help prevent face-to-face contact between customer or employees. Arrows can be added to the floor or added to hanging signs to suggest proper walking etiquette. These can be crafted with colored tape, stickers, rugs, etc.

Distanced Seating

Place chairs, school desks, and cubicles several feet from one another to avoid physical touching or droplet transmission. This can be as simple as just shifting chairs to more innovative furniture that integrates distancing design.

Queue Area Marks

Markings on the ground can be placed 6ft apart in places where people tend to stand in line such as grocery store checkouts, queue areas for amusement park rides, and waiting lines for airport security checks.
