Exhaust

Full systems

Jardine

Marketed to fit the F model, it fits both naked and faired models from all years. The Jardine has a normal sized can and is constructed entirely of stainless steel and aluminum. They can be found on eBay for $330 or so, as well as through www.jardineproducts.com for $410. No exhaust removal is necessary to change the oil. The Jardine pipe is backwards compatible with all model years of the GS, even if it is marketed towards the newer ones.

An older design made for the E models was discontinued over a decade ago and EXTREMELY rarely shows up somewhere. Very few know about this, and even less have been seen. This was another "Small Can" exhaust system.

Yoshimura

Although discontinued in 1994, the Yoshimura full exhaust system is said to produce the most power of any full system for the GS500. Two versions were made; the first system made was the "black can" system, which either had a flat end cap with the Yoshimura logo engraved into it or a heavily extruded muffler tip. The "silver can" was the later model and had only an extruded muffler tip. The Yoshimura full system does not fit the 2004+ F models due to interference between the oil pan bolts and the headers. The system needs to be dropped or removed in order to change the oil. The Yoshimura muffler is of the "Small Can" variety, meaning the overall diameter of the silencer is less than that of a normal motorcycle muffler, ~3.5", rather than 5+". Yoshimura has recently started producing a slip on TRS silencer that comes with the can and mid pipe, but utilizes the stock header. It is available in stainless, carbon fiber, and titanium.

Only available used. Usually goes for $250.

Vance and Hines

Another of the Small Can varieties as well as the most common in the US. Like the Yoshimura, the V&H system has to be lowered or removed in order to change the oil. The benefit is best performance as the two header pipes are the same length which gives balanced tuning to both cylinders. The V&H headers are prone to paint loss, and in order to prevent rusting they must be painted every few years. V&H still makes new systems for the GS 500 for every model year. The V&H full system is available at bikebandit.com for $272.25, including shipping. This is the lowest price for any new GS 500 high performance exhaust system anywhere on the internet as of January, 2009. I did an "exhaustive" search and just bought one!

Magnum

Only availible in Australia, the Magnum exhaust system is constructed entirely of stainless steel. Cost is roughly $750 AUD. This will fit both F and naked models and should not need removal in order to change the oil.

Laser Oval Deeptone

One of the more expensive full systems, the Laser Oval Deeptone is an entirely stainless constructed exhaust and comes with a removable endcap in order to change volume level as desired. Cost is roughly $500 plus shipping through one of the importers in the US. This system will fit the F model and does not require removal in order to change the oil.

Motad Nexxus

Availible primarily in Europe the Motad Nexxus exhaust system costs £260.00 and comes with stainless steel headers, collector, with a chromed midpipe and silencer.

Hindle

An extremely rare and discontinued full system, the Hindle exhaust was made to fit the older GS500E models. They can be seen on eBay if you are amazingly lucky.

Slip on

With a little bit of fabrication, essentially any slip on silencer can be fitted onto the GS. Many have used mufflers from manufactureres such as Vance & Hines, Yoshimura, Micron, FMF, D&D, Remus, and any number of other manufacturers. //

Yoshimura Slip-On

Yoshimura recently released a TRS slip-on can for the GS. It is marketed towards the 05-07 F model (and possibly the 04) because the stock pipe is a different diameter. If you want to install this on an 89-02 GS, you will need to use a bushing or otherwise modify the stock pipe to increase its diameter to match the slip-on. This will cost approximately $50 at an exhaust shop or less if you do it yourself.

Yamaha R6 Slip-On

This is probably the easiest of the custom slip-ons, as the r6 has a 45mm pipe(the same as a gs). The only issue with this system is the curve of the link pipe, causing interference with the swing arm.

The R6 can must be from model year 98 -2001 (Carb model) in order to fit as later years have a different diameter.

For this can, you have to cut the stock exhaust just after the 2 to 1 box, leaving about 2 to 3 inches so the link pipe has something to clamp to.

There are 2 ways to remedy the swing arm interference issue:

1. Cut and re-weld the link pipe to get the right angle

See hmmmnz's video with sound for more details (NZ/UK).

2. Get a couple of washers and force the can outwards to clear the swing arm

See trichuris's video with sound for more details (UK).

Username "jonathanneely" from GSTwin, owner of a 2007 model purchased a 98 - 01 Yamaha R6 Delkevic Slip-on off eBay for $159 shipped and it was a direct fit. Like it says above it did need to be shimmed out at the exhaust hanger where the canister bolts on so that it would clear the swing arm. The 2 into one measures just over 1.75' and the link pipe for the Delkevic at the inlet measures 2". It did come with a clamp so it fit fine. Also, the center stand has to be removed. The Delkevic is a silencer exhaust so it's not incredibly loud, but it does give it a nice growl at lower RPMs and pitches out quite nice higher in the rev range, not to mention, it looks dang good.

Bolt-On

Since the stock exhaust is one piece and no one makes a GS midpipe, a bolt-on exhuast requires an adapter between the front of the can and the pipe. This is a mid-pipe adapter that connects the 2-into-1 portion of the GS500 stock exhaust to the bolt holes on the can. You can order one that works with cans that have 3 bolt holes from GSTwins member seshadri_srinath (newer 4-hole cans will NOT work with this flange), though currently he's out of stock. You can also have one fabricated by your local muffler shop.

Wileyco

One extremely popular option is the Wileyco (pronounced Vee-lay-co). It can be found on Ebay, and many times a double-can for a larger bike can be split between two people.

Hindle Slip-On

GSTwins member Turd Ferguson purchased a carbon fiber slip-on Hindle Stealth exhaust from Dennis Kirk (through Ebay) for $130 and attached it using a srinath flange. He also had a K&N lunchbox style filter installed. His jetting for this combo was 22.5/65/147.5 with 3 turns out on the idle mixture screws. He reports that this set up is "spot-on" and the bike runs perfect in all weather conditions.

You can see a video clip (with sound) here.

Cobra F1r

A popular addition many years ago was the Cobra F1r slip on, which had to be custom mounted on the GS as it wasn't directly made for the GS. I have one and it's quite loud, but it seems to lack mid-range punch so I bought a V&H system. I'll let you know if it's better once the snow melts!

IXIL

Similar to the Srinath Flang + Wileyco, the Ixil slip-ons are made together and come in three varieties: Competition, Euroline Oval, and Euroline Rount. Prices should be in the $350 area. These will require cutting, but should not require custom fabrication.

NOTE: The Ixil information is limited. The above information is for a true slip-on. The Ixil units could possibly be just a silencer, in which case custom fabrication WOULD be required.

Berglöwe by Roads

This slip-on exhaust Berglöwe are made by Roads, an Italian company. Roads designed this exhaust in 2007 from the high demand for GS. His price is 190€ for titanium and 210€ for the carbon finished. Have a dbkiller, a dual sound system (public and closed circuit), to comply with the laws of the European homologation.

Custom

With a lot of effort, you can do anything you want. One example is D-Day's undertail system:
