Berkeley-Stanford Vanpool

What's the Berkeley-Stanford Vanpool? berkeleyvan FAQ

The Berkeley-Stanford Vanpool is an efficient, cheap, and friendly alternative to driving yourself to work from Berkeley to Stanford. Subscribers to the vanpool meet Monday through Friday at Berkeley's Ashby BART station, and commute together to Stanford. We are not a shuttle service, just a group of people pooling our efforts and making the daily commute to work. If you are interested in joining us, please review the details below before contacting us. Vanpool subscribers should ride with us 3 or more days per week and take turns driving.

Regular Vanpool Members, a.k.a. Subscribers:

Subscribers are the regular, year-round commuters who have a reserved seat on the vanpool and who share in the work of funding, driving, organizing and maintaining the vanpool every week. Subscribers must be willing and able to drive one day per week (5 people each have a regular driving day, and the others pitch in frequently). Enterprise requires drivers to be age 25 years or older, licensed for 5 or more years in the U.S. with a valid California Driver's License and clean driving record. Drivers must also be reliable, prioritize safety, and consistently follow the rules of the road. Drivers receive a $10 discount for each round-trip driven. This discount is credited toward the following month's dues. Subscriber fees: Stanford commute club eligible subscribers are subsidized by Stanford and pay $100 per month before discounts. Those who are not Stanford-eligible pay $200 per month before discounts. Examples of discounts include employer incentives and $10 credit for each day that you drive the van round trip. Rates may change (up and down) depending on factors such as the price of gasoline, ridership, van size, lease provider rate increases, etc.

Why Vanpool?

Besides saving on the cost of fuel, toll, and wear & tear, vanpool subscribers enjoy:

  • Not having to drive every day
  • Always using the carpool lane
  • Reclaiming 2+ hours of their day to read, sleep, work, or just socialize
  • Doing something good for the environment every day
  • Earning up to $300 in Clean Air Cash (eligible Stanford employees)
  • Riding in a well-maintained & insured vehicle, knowing that your driver has been DMV screened by Enterprise.
  • Occasional use of the van on weekends for errands, etc. (certified drivers only, mileage limits apply)

Daily Schedule

Arrival times approximate - traffic varies, but these estimates are pretty reliable in our experience. The route may be changed according recommendations from traffic apps and traffic reports. In A.M., stops are made only as needed by van occupants. Stops that were skipped in A.M. are skipped in P.M. unless driver is notified otherwise. Main campus stop is usually at Serra & Galvez. At times, it is changed to the Oval based on parking/driving/campus construction logistics. Med Center stop is usually at the Hospital Emergency Room Entrance. At times, it is changed based on parking/driving/campus construction logistics.

  • Rates may change (up and down) periodically depending on factors such as the price of gasoline, ridership, van size, lease provider rate increases, etc.
  • Casual riders - $10
  • Subscriber fees pay for gas, tolls, car wash, $10 driver credit.

You're probably saying to yourself, "Boy, that sounds expensive!"

Well, sure, $100 - $200 ain't cheap (actually, on second thought, that **IS** cheap!), but when you subtract your driver credit, then take into account Stanford's transportation incentives like Clean Air Cash or similar benefits offered by many large employers, and then think about the physical and psychological costs of slugging through that commute by yourself every day....you'll also come to the conclusion that the cost of self-driving is substantially higher. Furthermore, if we can attract more subscribers and get a larger van, the per-person cost may go down.
