Friends,

This summer, if there's enough interest, I'd like to run an online debate tournament. The rules will follow CHSSA rules as closely as possible, with the following exceptions to negotiate the textual medium:

  • Debaters will participate as individuals rather than partnerships.
  • School affiliation will not officially be recognized in any way. As such, individuals from the same school may be assigned to debate one another.
  • There will be no points of information, but there will be cross-examination after the first two speeches.
  • Prep time is allowed since people all have different schedules over the summer and can't be expected to be around their computers all the time. After the resolution is announced, the debater representing the government side will be given 24 hours to post his/her PMC. Cross-examinations questions and answers must be posted within 12 hours after the appropriate speeches. All other speeches must be posted within 24 hours of the previous speech or cross-examination.
  • Rather than time limits for speeches, there will be word count limits:

    • PMC - 1500 Words
    • CX of PMC - Up to 5 questions, not to exceed 200 words.
    • PMC Responses to CX - 300 words.
    • LOC - 1500 Words
    • CX of LOC - Up to 5 questions, not to exceed 200 words.
    • LOC Responses to CX - 300 words.
    • MGC - 1500 Words
    • MOC/LOR - 2500 Words
    • PMR - 1000 Words

Any speech that exceeds any of these limits should be brought to the tournament director (Vassar)'s attention immediately and will result in disqualification of the offending debater for the round and a loss recorded for that round.

  • No citations or appeals to authority are permitted under this format.
  • Debaters may not use bullet points or outline form for their speeches. Speeches must be in a narrative form, with complete sentences used.
  • After a speech is posted, debaters are permitted to make any edits or modifications for 10 minutes thereafter. If any debater edits a speech more than 10 minutes after his or her speech has been posted, he or she will immediately be disqualified from the round and the round will be recorded as a loss.
  • Judges must post their decision and reason for it within 24 hours of the final speech.
  • Until the judges have rendered their decisions, only the debaters and their judge(s) for a given pairing will be permitted to post within the thread designated for that pairing. After the judge's decision has been rendered, anybody may post in these threads.
  • Nobody other than the assigned debater should write speeches or cross-examination questions or answers for the debater assigned to a debate round. If anybody is discovered in violation of this rule, he or she will be disqualified from the entire tournament.
  • There are no set number of rounds or out-rounds at this point. We will get a better grasp for things as we go along.
  • Because of family vacations, debate camps, or any number of other things that may come up over the summer, all debaters are permitted to miss any two rounds for any reason. Debaters must notify me at least one week beforehand if they have any dates during which they cannot debate.
  • Because debaters will have a different number of total rounds, out-rounds will be determined by win percentage (and not by total number of ballots picked up).
  • All rounds will be power-matched. At the discretion of the tournament director, debaters may be scheduled to meet each other multiple times. Judges may be assigned to the same debater multiple times.
  • All speeches are the intellectual property of the people who wrote them. While it would be appreciated if people kept their speeches online for others to view, debaters may take down their speeches if they feel it appropriate.

This is an experiment in a new online high school format. If anybody has any suggestions or comments on how the rules might be better, please feel free to voice them.

People can register for the tournament at the registration thread.
