Before I disclose my decision and the RFD, I do have a few things I want to say... First of all, good round from both Gov and Opp. Both of you were very structured in your arguments, it made things infinitely easier for me to follow you (since, as we all know, judges are lazy, lazy people ). Bailey--your definition of democracy could've actually hurt you and limited your ground. Countries like Britain and France do things much different than we do, but they are most certainly democracies...and strong ones at that (well, maybe not France ). Just a heads-up there. Also, in regards to your PMR--do not assume anything about a judge--some judges will not be able to find their head with both hands and a flashlight, much less be able to connect the dots. Always err on the side of holding the judge's hand. I was fine with the argumentation as you gave it, but not all judges will. igaboj--bad idea bringing Hitler into your argumentation. All Bailey would've had to do was say, "Turn: Hitler was a dictator, he killed 12 million people. Opp uses Hitler as a model dictator, therefore, we can see that strong dictators are mass murderers, vote Gov." Bailey kinda sorta did that (Bailey, I hope you're reading this, too), but you REALLY left yourself open to a real can of worms for not much in return. If you want examples of strong dictatorships, minus the genocide, try looking deeper into history--the Pax Romana springs to mind as a less exteme version of dictatorial government. Now for the RFD: I was very pleased at how both of you managed to narrow down your arguments into their terminal impacts in your rebuttals--again, makes things easier for me. What the round weighed down to was the idea that weak democracy leads to anarchy, while strong dictatorships lead to genocide...which basically meant, would I rather live in an anarchical world or a genocidal world? Opp does a great job of illustrating the ills of anarchy...but I'm sorry, speed limits and loss of patent and copyright statutes doesn't exactly outweigh loss of life. While I normally am loathe to vote on genocide (usually due to tenuous link stories), empirics are clearly on the Gov's side--the fact that dictators like Pol Pot committed mass murder was never adequately refuted in the block, and since the loss of life is the be-all, end-all impact, I vote Gov. To both sides, once again, well done, and if either of you have questions/comments/hate mail, feel free to backchannel me.
